Choosing the right headpiece for your face shape

Many clients arrive thinking there is a right or wrong choice when it comes to face shape.
That certain styles should be avoided, while others are considered 'safe'.
In reality the process is far more considered and far more personal than that.

Choosing the right headpiece is not about correcting the face. It is about working with proportion, balance and how a piece sits in relation to the individual wearing it.
A beautifully chosen piece does not draw attention to any single feature. Instead, it brings everything into quiet harmony. The eye does not pause. It moves.
Rather than thinking in fixed categories, it can be helpful to consider what you would like to achieve.
If you are drawn to a more elongated silhouette, a piece with gentle height or lift can create that sense of length. This might be a bandeau with subtle elevation or a design that sits slightly higher on the head rather than close to it.
If you prefer softness, rounded shapes and curved lines tend to feel more natural. These pieces echo rather than contrast, creating a sense of ease.
For those who enjoy a little more presence, structure can be introduced through sharper lines or more defined shapes. The effect is not boldness for its own sake but a quiet sense of intention.
Placement plays an equally important role.
A slight shift in angle, a change in position, or the way a piece is anchored can completely alter how it frames the face.
A bandeau worn further forward feels different to one set back slightly. A percher worn with a gentle tilt introduces movement, while a more centred position can feel composed and classic.
These are small decisions, but they are often what transform a piece from something that simply looks beautiful into something that feels entirely right.
At its heart, millinery is not about rules. It is about understanding balance and allowing that understanding to guide a choice that feels natural rather than prescribed. Each piece is considered in relation to the wearer, not just the design itself.
When the balance is right, something shifts. The piece no longer feels like an addition. It becomes part of the whole. And that is where confidence begins.
If you have an outfit and an occasion approaching, Catherine would be delighted to help you find the perfect finishing touch.
